BIOGRAPHY

Born in Chiclayo, Peru -Piscoya's paintings are strongly symbolic. Discreet and with a sparse composition, the works have a timeless quality yet recall an ancestral past. Based on pre-Columbian paintings, Piscoya creates every piece, including the paper he paints on, from sand and dust.work is rooted in pre-columbian-Iconographic. It is characterized by as unceasing struggle between Figurative and Abstract.

He studied painting at the School of Fine Arts of Lima 1983-1989, obtaining the Central Reserve Bank of Peru Award. Certainly at some stage of his creative process it led him to investigate the pre-Columbian textile design of the Chimu, Huari, Paracas culture, etc., specifically in the division of blueprints, interpreting the geometric order of the composition, and in some occasions to experiment the way of finding the colors of the ancient Peruvian artists, also using leaves, vegetable fruits, natural oxides and a vegetable medium to obtain the primer of the colors on the fabric, sometimes with notable success.

He has been exploring with sand, dust, artificial marble, hand crafted paper, and earth of various hues. Currently, PISCOYA uses wood powder and derivatives in his works. There is more to the technique than just applying the components to the canvas. The material is rather bound with other elements to ensure the work’s perennity.

His favorite themes range from planimetric characters, the peculiar zoomorphic universe, especially placed in the background to energize the composition, as well as magical elements, which are sometimes placed in front of everyday symbols. His favor palette he uses is gray, it ranges from yellow ochres, creamy white. Indian red, grayish, greens. etc... His particular style and technique earned him many awards and recognitions in the country and abroad, always with the intention of universalizing the culture and art of our country

PISCOYA has developed his own language thanks to the quality of his compositions rendered in rich earth tones, as well as the symmetry and balance of shapes and forms. PISCOYA’s paintings are strongly symbolic, characterized by timeless dimensions. His works have a unique, mystical, and magical character.
