Pascal Smarth

Pascal Smarth

Pascal Smarth was born in Haiti, Cavaillon in 1966 - Was introduced to drawing and painting, early in his childhood, by his father, an amateur painter.

Pascal Smarth is well received today by the experts as one of the very rare abstract Haitian artists.

He studied Arts at the National School of Arts (ENARTS) and became an accomplished professional in 1991. A training program in engraving at l’Ecole des Arts plastiques de la Martinique has strengthened its technical achievements. Although Pascal Smarth has started with the figurative art and revisits it from time to time, he is an abstract painter, a style he chose to adopt in 1994 by observing Kandinsky work, by “the power of color and the dynamism of forms”. The Haitian critic and poet Gary Augustin (1958-2014) praised the works of Pascal Smarth presented to Jerome Workshops in 2006 as the most successful of his career. " In Smarth’s works, the line is basic and the color is pre-eminent. This artist has never been this far in his promise to refuse to just represent. We are in the presence of the most successful period in the young career of this artist. "(Le Matin, December 2006). Pascal Smarth moved to Montreal with his family in 2001. This new cultural environment sharpens his sensitivity and consolidates his abilities by exposing him to other approaches and perceptions.
